“Frank’s Wedding” – Modern Family – Season 8 Episode 19

Phil: My dad and Lorraine decided to have a 1920s-themed wedding. Such a romantic time.

Claire: Yeah. Dust bowls, the Klan, Prohibition. Claire pauses and looks off to her right.

Phil: Oh, I'm -- I'm sure they'll have alcohol.

THE SCENE

Lorraine, played by Faith Prince, and Frank, portrayed by the hilarious actor Fred Willard, were wed at a hotel somewhere in California. The groom wore an ivory suit with matching tie and a beige vest. The bride wore a knee-length black lace dress with a high neckline and illusion sleeves, with flowers in her hair, black gloves on her hands, and pearls around her neck.

Lorraine held a bouquet of lilies, while a single lily was pinned to the lapel of Frank's suit coat. The room in which the ceremony was held had walls painted in a deep red. These walls were accented by the occasional floral arrangement consisting of long stemmed lilies, peacock feathers, and a mix of blue and purple flowers in tall gold vases set upon pedestals. A 4 tier cake can be seen in the background that features similar blue and purple flowers, and perhaps a small peacock as the topper.

Sticking to the 1920's theme, the ceremony was interrupted "gangsters," erupting into a brief shootout with paintball guns just before the vows were exchanged. For a goofball like Frank and a lover of goofballs like Lorraine, it was truly their dream ceremony.

THE REALITY

The Dunphy clan really went the extra mile by wearing clothing to match the theme of the wedding. Chicago Costumes is a great source for theme wedding garments, and offer both men's and women's 1920's theme attire. Something similar to Phil and Luke's suits can be obtained for roughly $80, while Haley's flapper dress can vary in price from $50 to $350. Finding a Prohibition-era mourning gown similar to the dress worn by Alex will require a little more research. I'm also not much of a car person, so I have no idea exactly what type of car it was that the family took to the wedding. However, I do know that a similar vehicle can be rented from Classic Wedding Cars starting at $750 for three hours.

As for the attire of the bride and groom, we can assume they most likely purchased their clothing. The ivory suit worn by Frank is similar to the Joseph & Feiss Ivory Notch Tuxedo from Men's Wearhouse, which can be rented starting at $99. Nordstrom offers a dress much like the one worn by Lorraine, the Emery Lace Body-Con Midi Dress by Dress the Population, starting at $218.

If you want to have a shoot-out in the middle of the ceremony, Amazon offers a wide variety of paintball guns from pistols to multi-fire devices. The pistols seem to cost $250 on average, while the other guns are a bit less expensive. By my count, there were 5 different paintball guns at the ceremony, so I estimate a $1,200 investment in mid-ceremony entertainment.

The flowers used in the ceremony probably cost about $1,500. If you are interested in booking a hotel for your wedding ceremony and reception, I absolutely recommend the Hyatt Rosemont. With packages starting at $82 per guest, their two banquet facilities offer the perfect canvas for any color scheme or wedding theme. While it is difficult to estimate the amount of guests at Frank and Lorraine's wedding, the largest room there does seat up to 200 guests, which if filled to capacity would cost around $16,400. While the price does not include food, it does include a wedding cake and an open bar!

Phil's contribution to the wedding probably cost about $2,000, while the rest of the wedding would cost somewhere in the $22,000 range before catering expenses and reception-related entertainment.
